Our History

A small, low power AM radio station was completed in fall of 2005 as part of a wireless technology class. The radio station, due to its low power (one-tenth of a watt) did not need to be licensed by the FCC (Federal Communications Commision) and was given, by the students in the class, the call sign WLHS. Thats "W" followed by LHS for Lowell High School.

A local radio station engineer, who had assisted with the AM radio project, suggested that we explore the possibilty of expanding to a 24/7 internet radio station. We approached our technology department and were advised that, not only could they do it, they had already been tinkering with it. Within a couple weeks we had the internet radio station up and running through a Lowell Area Schools server utilizing Nullsoft's free winamp-based 'SHOUTcast' for streaming audio.

In early spring 2006, we recieved permission from Lowell Cable TV, owned by the city of Lowell (MI), to place our streaming audio onto the public access channel, channel 20. In april 2007 WLHS took over the public access channel and now maintains all content.

It is lots of work, but lots of fun
