WLHS History
A small, low-power AM radio station was completed in the Fall of 2005 as part of a wireless lechnology class. The radio station, due to its low power (one-tenth of a watt) did not need to be licensed by the FCC (Federal Communications Commission) and was given, by the students in the class, the call sign of WLHS. Thats 'W' followed by LHS, as in 'Lowell High School'.
A local radio station engineer, who had assisted us with the AM radio project, suggested that we explore the possibility of expanding into 24/7 internet streaming audio. We approached our technology department and were advised that, not only could they do it, but they had already been 'tinkering' with it. In a couple of weeks we had the internet radio station up-and-running thru a Lowell Area School server utilizing Nullsoft's free Winamp-based 'SHOUTcast' streaming audio system.
In early Spring of 2006, we received permission from Lowell Cable TV, owned by the City of Lowell (MI), to place our streaming audio onto their channel 20.
The 2005/2006 school year was extremely busy for us, as we put together the low-power AM station, internet radio station, and completed the 'connections' to Lowell Cable TV. In addition, we were purchasing and installing, through a Lowell Area Community Fund grant, equipment for the studio. Not to be left out was working with students interested in being D.J.'s, Engineers, and Webmasters.
The LCTV Public Access Channel 20 was moved to the Lowell High School in April of 2007.
In July of 2007, Lowell Cable Television System was sold to Comcast
Lots of work, but lots of fun.
